Phuket Baba Museum

Phuket Baba Museum or Standard Chartered Bank Museum is a fine example of Phuket Town’s historic Sino-Portuguese architecture. Inside is a small, modest museum devoted to Phuket’s Baba or Peranakan culture, which was born in the 19th century as the Phuketian and Chinese populations mixed. The building of the former bank was empty for 30 years until it was turned into a museum in 2012. Chartered Bank was the first foreign bank permitted to operate in Thailand. The Phuket office opened originally at the very beginning of twentieth century at the start of tin boom in Phuket. The bank merged with Standard Bank in 1969 and the office in Phuket was closed.

Museum is open every day from 9 to 16 except Monday.

Right opposite is the yellow-walled, similarly styled Thai Police Building, with its distinctive four-tiered clock tower.
